Last Chance: Things You Gotta Do the Week of May 7

Helping homeless children and those who want to learn Chinese.

Thursday,  May 10: Last day to bring in goods for the “Essentials for Young Lives Drive” at the Del Obispo Elementary YMCA program.

Mothers and children are the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population with 35 percent of homeless families having children – and 25 percent of those children are under the age of 18.

Simply bring one or more baby items to the Del Obispo YMCA:

  • Diapers
  • Baby wipes
  • Baby food
  • Baby bottles
  • Baby products (wash/lotion/etc)

Friday, May 11: Want to support the at Capistrano Unified School District? Friday’s the last day to register for the 2012 Long Beach Dragon Boat Races.  

The actual race days are July 28-29 at Marine Stadium.

The adult boat and elementary boats will consist of 18 paddlers (with a minimum six female paddlers), drummer and steers person.

Student participants need to between the ages of 7 and 12 years old.  Parents must sign waivers for the children. This is a great opportunity to for MIP families to get older siblings involved, said Thalia Tong, who’s been leading the campaign to bring the program to CUSD. in Laguna Niguel will be the site of the new program, starting in fall.

This event is free for participants. The Friends of the Manderin Immersion Program will be asking for sponsorships to cover all registration and miscellaneous costs.
