More Jobs on the Chopping Block at Capo Unified

District-run preschools are targeted as 25 percent of state funding is expected to dry up.

Nearly a dozen preschool positions in are on the chopping block.

The source of funding for the preschool programs comes from the state and will likely see a 25 percent cut, according to a district report. If Capo were to use the general fund—the main operating budget—to keep those positions, it would cost about $350,000.

District staffers are recommending that the board of trustees on Wednesday ax the equivalent of 11.85 full-time positions, which are currently filled by people who work part time. The report included with the meeting's agenda packet does not indicate how many people would actually be laid off.

The positions are:

  • 6 preschool teachers
  • 4.4 preschool instructional assistants
  • 1.46 preschool bilingual, instructional assistants

The preschool teachers are not certificated and therefore not part of the teachers union. They are considered classified employees. By law, they need 45 days notice for an impending layoff.

A month ago, the school board , which affected 28 employees.

According to Wednesday’s agenda, the school board will take another look at its financial situation when the staff presents a third status report for the fiscal year 2010-11 year.

The board meets at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the district headquarters, 33122 Valley Rd. in San Juan Capistrano.
