Two Students at San Juan Hills Named National Merit Finalists

The academic award gives them better access to scholarships.

Two students at San Juan Hills High School, seniors Kiana R. Hui and Dominick E. Wong, have been named National Merit finalists and inch closer to winning National Merit scholar status.

The presitious award is based on academic performance and opens the door to possible scholarships from corporations and universities worth more than $34 million, according to a press release from the Capistrano Unified School District.

Scholarship winners will be announced this spring and summer.

Superintendent Joseph Farley called Hui and Wong, who joined nine other students around the district as National Merit finalists named Thursday, as "shining examples" of the results the district's educational offerings produce.

"Their parents and teachers also deserve plenty of credit for providing the support and environment of academic success and high expectation necessary to produce such quality students,” he said in the press release.

Established in 1955, National Merit Scholarship Corp. is an independent, not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance
