Football: Boron 60, Capistrano Valley Christian 44

Northeast playoffs: A huge deficit is too much to overcome as Capistrano Valley loses its second in a row after nine consecutive wins.

For the first time this season, 42 points was not enough for Capistrano Valley Christian to win a football game. 

Boron poured it on in the early going against CVC on Friday, and the Bobcats' hefty 30-point lead was insurmountable in the first round of the Southern Section Northeast Division playoffs.

With the road victory over CVC at San Clemente, Boron will play third-seeded Salesian in the second round next week.

Key Stats: Boron rushed for 653 yards, including D.J. Payne’s 40 carries for 392 yards and three touchdowns.

Pivotal Moment: The start could not have gone worse for CVC as Boron led 24-0 less than seven minutes into the game. But Sam Sukut scoring runs of 2 and 50 yards midway through the second quarter made it 30-14, but the Eagles couldn’t build on the momentum or get any closer; Boron answered with an 86-yard scoring drive that ended with Payne’s 2-yard run with seven seconds left.

Notes: Capo Valley Christian could never score more than two consecutive touchdowns to cut into the Boron lead. … Payne wasn’t the only star for Boron. Beau Sexton scored on runs of 1, 16 and 54 yards. He finished with 109 yards rushing. … After Payne scored from 2 to open the second half, CVC answered with back-to-back touchdowns. Sam Sukut ran for 2 yards and Riley Babick passed for 25 to Mike Updegraffe. … Sam Sukut rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns for CVC. ... Babick passed for 180 yards and two touchdowns to Updegraff, including a 54-yarder that closed the scoring with 6:02 left in the game.  … CVC was unbeaten before losing its final two games. … CVC has scored 42 points or more seven times in 11 games.
