Reader Submission: SVCS Kicks Off Middle School Football Season

Saddleback Valley Christian Schools has decided to kick off the 2011 football season by fielding its inaugural middle school team that will participate in the Christian Football League, playing tackle football against five other teams from Southern California.

Last spring, 38 players signed up for the team, which has a 1-2 record so far this season. SVCS plays on Friday against Linfield Christian at JSerra High. Kickoff is 4 p.m.

The team opened its season with an 8-6 loss to Calvary Chapel Murrieta, then the next week, held a late lead before losing 22-20 to Rio Hondo Prep, the defending league champion.

On Thursday, Ryan DeViso rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns to help the Warriors earn their first victory, 30-20, over California Military Institute.

Over the three games, quarterback Cade Henjum has thrown five touchdown passes to three different receivers -- two to both Ben Anderson and David Molina and one to Steele Brenner. Molina scored the team’s first touchdown of the season against Calvary Chapel Murrieta on a pass from Henjum.  Brenner has returned a kickoff for a touchdown and is the team’s leading tackler.

The team competes in the Christian Football League which includes teams from Calvary Chapel Murrieta, California Military Institute in Perris, Rio Hondo Prep in Arcadia, Tri-City Christian in Vista, and Linfield Christian in Temecula.
