PHOTOS: SJHHS and Compton Softball Teams Come Together for Clinic

The Stallion girls donate equipment to their cash-strapped counterparts at Compton High, then run a four-hour clinic together.

Two schools from two different worlds collided in a good way on the San Juan Hills High softball field.

Stallions Head Coach Cary Baker caught wind that the Compton High softball team was in need of new equipment. He, his fellow coaches and the players decided to take $250 from a fund-raising pot and share it with the Compton Tarbabes.

In addition, parents and other community members donated new and used equipment, including 25 helmets, five sets of catcher's gear, severla bats, shoes, about 80 balls along with equipment bags, clothing and gloves.

Dick's Sporting Goods also donated two $50 gift certificates.

But more than material goods, the two teams took to the Stallion home field for a four-hour softball clinic Saturday. Compton brought 14 girls.

"At the end of what turned out to be a wonderful day for all involved, there was a picnic with pizza, corn dogs, popsicles and fruit," Baker said.

He added that with a program only four years in the making, the girls at San Juan Hills know what it's like to be short on equipment.

"The Compton team climbed on their bus with not only full stomachs, good memories and new friends but with the much needed equipment for the upcoming season," Baker said.
