Soccer: El Toro Beats JSerra for South County Championship

It's two years in a row for the Chargers.

For the second year in a row, the El Toro High School boys' soccer team has taken the South Orange County Championship.

When you get the No. 5 team in the county, El Toro, against the No. 6 team, JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, it’s bound to be a tight game. And Saturday’s 3-1 game played at Mission Viejo High School did not disappoint.

The Chargers got on the scoreboard first, at the 12th minute, when Nicolo D’Amato headed in a long throw from Ethan Thrall, according to OC Varsity.

Seven minutes later, JSerra’s Max Gamperl took advantage when the ball got a fortuitously-placed bounce off a fellow player’s back.

El Toro’s D’Amato also had a hand in the Chargers’ second goal, setting up Ezequiel Ochoa for the go-ahead goal in the 22nd minute. The game was sealed when Nick Grimes scored at minute 50.

“It is always fun to win again,” D’Amato told OC Varsity. “We did the same last year. The first couple games we played OK, and the final we played really well.”
