Traffic Delays, Surfing Santas and Happy Birthday Father Serra

What you need to know about weekend events in and around San Juan Capistrano.

1. Traffic delay ahead: The Orange County Flood Control District will move an oversize, overweight pile-driving crane on Del Obispo Street between Alipaz Street and Paseo Adelanto between the hours of 7-9 a.m. Saturday.

Traffic is expected to be delayed by about 15 minutes while the crane crosses the bridge. The Orange County Sheriff's Department will be on hand to assist with the move and control traffic. For more information, contact Irene Marcote at 949 443-6353 or J.F. Shea at 951-453-9736

2. Go green: Saddleback College hosts its annual greenhouse sale today from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Hanging baskets, cacti and succulent bowls, shrubs and more will be on sale.

3. Santa surfs too: Haven’t you always wanted to dress like Santa and surf? I know I have! Participate in the Surfing Santa Competition at Salt Creek 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

4. Go ahead and dye: The Orange County Great Park will be home to the 2013 Run or Dye 5k 8 a.m. This playful run encourages participants to splash each other with brightly colored dye as they make their way through various running courses. Individuals are charged $57. Teams of four or more are charged $52 per person.

5. Happy birthday Father Serra! Mission San Juan Capistrano is celebrating Father Junipero Serra’s 300th birthday. A special bell ringing will be followed by birthday cake.

6. Music on tap: Swallows Inn has Von Cotton Friday night, Missiles of October Saturday afternoon, Jimi Nelson Saturday night and Keven Cameron and Pale Riders Sunday afternoon. Coach House has Mark Chesnutt Friday and an ABBA tribute band Saturday.
