BLOG: What Will Rogers Would Have Said about ... the SJC Train Crossing

There hasn't been as much whoopin' and hollerin' in San Juan Capistrano since the pirates paid us a visit a while back, and this time it's all about a railroad crossing.

There hasn’t been as much whoopin’ and hollerin’ in San Juan since the pirates paid us a visit a while back, and this time it’s all about a railroad crossing.

Back when I was a kid in Oklahoma, there was one railroad track crossin’ the state and the trains made so much noise you didn’t need any special warning.  The horses heard 'em before we did and ya had to work pretty hard to keep them from runnin’ the other way, let alone get run over.

Our parents told us to look both ways and not stand on the tracks and in the same breath would tell us to not touch toadstools and don’t pee on the electric fence. Mostly we listened to their advice except the electric fence part.

I reckon someone a while back was thinkin' about our safety when all of this was planned. But sometimes our good intentions backfire on us. It’s not likely we’ll find a politician who will back out of a project for public safety or a humorist who will back out of a gag. So I recommend you just relax for a minute and count the cars like we used to do in Oklahoma.

Funny thing, the last train I counted I came up with zero cars – well, maybe I dozed off or something?
